Play is the method
In Preschool, English comes in through songs, stories, routines and play. Be wary of a kindergarten that boasts about worksheets and tests: at this age, cognitive, motor and social-emotional development is built through play.
Routines in two languages
Ask what a normal day looks like: the morning circle, the learning centers, story time. If routines happen in English, children pick up the language without noticing.
Foundations for reading and math
Look for specific subjects: language skills, pre-math skills, letters and sounds. They're the foundation for literacy and mathematical thinking in Elementary School.
A schedule and spaces built for them
A half-morning schedule —8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., for example— respects little ones' rhythm. Also check the furniture, the playground and whether classrooms are air-conditioned.
